In an effort to do so myself, I&#8217;m starting a monthly series called &#8220;News for developers&#8221; which is exactly that: a summary of all of the Azure flavored news specifically for <strong>software developers<\/strong>. Note that all services mentioned are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Generally Available<\/span> (GA) so they can be used in production scenarios today. Exact availability of services might vary based on the Azure region you&#8217;re deploying to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New series of virtual machines are now available for use.<strong> D v4 and E v4<\/strong> for respectively general purpose and memory intensive workloads. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/new-azure-vms-for-general-purpose-and-memory-intensive-workloads-now-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Want to have a one-stop cost overview for your multi-vendor cloud services? Azure cost overview now supports AWS! (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/visualize-and-manage-your-aws-costs-in-azure-cost-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>I normally only cover .NET development news, but here&#8217;s one for Java devs! Meet <strong>Azure Spring Cloud<\/strong>, an Azure based service for your Spring based apps! (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/azure-spring-cloud-is-now-generally-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>You can now initiate a <strong>failover for Azure SQL<\/strong> Managed Instance yourself. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/userinitiated-failover-for-application-fault-resiliency-in-azure-sql-managed-instance-is-now-generally-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Durable Functions 2.3<\/strong> is now available, bringing support for enabling geo-redundant durable functions, long running timers and scheduled events. (<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Azure\/azure-functions-durable-extension\/releases\/tag\/v2.3.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Visual Studio Codespaces, the cloud based development environments are consolidating into\u00a0<strong>GitHub Codespaces<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-codespaces-is-consolidating-into-github-codespaces\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using Docker containers, you might be interested in the integration of <strong>Azure Container Instances<\/strong> in the latest version of <strong>Docker Desktop<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/blog\/azure-container-instances-docker-integration-now-in-docker-desktop-stable-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Several updates were made to the Azure Portal itself. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/azure-portal-september-2020-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Visual Studio &amp; Azure DevOps<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the news coming from the Visual Studio and Azure DevOps teams!<\/p>\n<p>For Visual Studio lovers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visual Studio 2019\u00a0<strong>version 16.7<\/strong>\u00a0is out there (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-v16-7-releases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>) and the preview version is 16.8 preview 3. (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-v16-8-preview-3-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Visual Studio 2019 for Mac\u00a0<strong>version 8.7<\/strong>\u00a0is now available (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-for-mac-version-8-7-is-now-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And these updates were part of sprint 173 &amp; 174 in Azure DevOps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scale-set agents<\/strong> are now available to scale your CI\/CD needs. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2020\/sprint-175-update#general-availability-of-scale-set-agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>If you have sufficient permissions, you can now schedule your pipeline job to\u00a0<strong>run next, <\/strong>bumping it to next up in the job queue. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2020\/sprint-175-update#run-this-job-next\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Test and Feedback<\/strong> extension for Test Plans is now available in the Microsoft Edge store. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2020\/sprint-175-update#the-test-and-feedback-extension-is-now-available-in-the-microsoft-edge-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>You can now use the comment field in a PR to automatically update the status of workitems. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2020\/sprint-176-update#customize-work-item-state-when-pull-request-is-merged\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Due to popular request, you can now add the Parent field to both the child and parent cards on the Task Board.
