You&#8217;re not alone! In an effort to do so myself, I&#8217;m starting a monthly series called &#8220;News for developers&#8221; which is exactly that: a summary of all of the Azure flavored news specifically for <strong>software developers<\/strong>. Want to know more? Check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.repsaj.nl\/index.php\/2020\/05\/azure-news-for-developers-the-readme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">readme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The pandemic something makes me lose track of things a little bit, but last month was BUILD month! That traditionally means: lots of news to report.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Azure<\/h2>\n<p>Here is a roll-up of all the Azure news which might relate to you as a developer. Note that all services mentioned are <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Generally Available<\/span> (GA) so they can be used in production scenarios today. Exact availability of services might vary based on the Azure region you&#8217;re deploying to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Where you could already soft delete a blob, you can now <strong>soft delete a container<\/strong> in Azure Storage as well. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/azure-blob-storage-container-soft-delete-generally-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>There were several updates for\u00a0<strong>API Management<\/strong>, including the ability to publish your API&#8217;s specifically for use with the Power Platform. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/azure-api-management-updates-july-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Azure Monitor\u00a0<\/strong>Insights and Workbook features are now available for use with Cosmos DB. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/insights-and-workbooks-for-azure-cosmos-db-now-in-general-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>On the topic of <strong>Cosmos DB<\/strong>, you can now use Cosmos DB as a session state and cache provider from the .NET SDK. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/session-and-cache-provider-using-azure-cosmos-db-in-general-availability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Using Java or NodeJS? Know that integration of\u00a0<strong>Application Insights<\/strong> with Azure App Service is now available for those use cases too. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/general-availability-application-insights-integration-with-app-services-for-java-nodejs-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Azure Arc<\/strong> lets companies distribute their workloads over multiple cloud providers. These capabilities now include support for\u00a0<strong>Azure SQL<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/azure-sql-enabled-by-azure-arc-generally-available-on-july-30-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re a\u00a0<strong>Stream Analytics<\/strong> user, you might be interested to know that there&#8217;s now VS Code extensions for stream analytics. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/general-availability-azure-stream-analytics-tools-for-visual-studio-code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The Azure\u00a0<strong>Web Application Firewall\u00a0<\/strong>now supports geomatch custom rules (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/general-availability-web-application-firewall-waf-geomatch-custom-rules-on-application-gateway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>) and offers bot protection. (<a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/updates\/general-availability-web-application-firewall-waf-bot-protection-on-application-gateway\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Visual Studio &amp; Azure DevOps<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the news coming from the Visual Studio and Azure DevOps teams!<\/p>\n<p>For Visual Studio lovers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Visual Studio 2019\u00a0<strong>version 16.10<\/strong>\u00a0is out there (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-v16-10-and-v16-11-preview-1-are-available-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>) and the preview version is 16.11 preview 1. (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-v16-10-and-v16-11-preview-1-are-available-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>For those who want to test the early bits, you can now also take\u00a0<strong>Visual Studio 2022<\/strong> for a spin! You can download <strong>Preview 2<\/strong> here: (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2022-preview-2-is-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Visual Studio 2019 for Mac\u00a0<strong>version 8.10<\/strong>\u00a0is now available (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/visual-studio-2019-for-mac-version-8-10-is-now-available\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>When you&#8217;re into productivity, check out these latest updates from the Roslyn team. These include features like removing unused packages from projects (w00p) and visually editing an .editorconfig file within Studio. (<a href=\"https:\/\/devblogs.microsoft.com\/visualstudio\/learn-whats-new-in-net-productivity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>If performance of your code is something you need instead, check out these updates to the <strong>.NET Object Allocation tool<\/strong> in VS. (link)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And these updates were part of sprint 188 in Azure DevOps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You can now <strong>restrict PAT scope and lifetime<\/strong> via Azure AD tenant policy. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2021\/sprint-188-update#restrict-personal-access-token-pat-scope-and-lifespan-via-azure-ad-tenant-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>It was previously not possible to retain a pipeline after it was consumed by another pipeline configured for retention. This has been fixed. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2021\/sprint-188-update#retain-pipelines-that-are-consumed-in-other-pipelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>In Azure Pipelines, you can use\u00a0<strong>exclusive lock checks<\/strong> to control which stages can deploy things onto protected resources. There&#8217;s now a setting which lets you control the lock behavior to support sequential deployments rather than latest only. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2021\/sprint-190-update#support-for-sequential-deployments-rather-than-latest-only-when-using-exclusive-lock-checks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s a change in the <strong>.NET SDK preinstallation policy<\/strong> for Microsoft-hosted and MacOS agents. This might impact you if you&#8217;re using those. Check out the details in the link. (<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/devops\/release-notes\/2021\/sprint-190-update#change-in-net-sdk-preinstallation-policy-on-microsoft-hosted-windows-and-macos-agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Changes to the <strong>PublishBuildArtifacts<\/strong> and <strong>DownloadBuildArtifacts<\/strong> tasks might impact your network requirements (firewalls). Check out the details in the link.
